About this event

Our summer concert marks the centenary of the death of Giacomo Puccini, justly celebrated as one of the greatest opera composers of all time.

This will be the first time in many years that the choir has sung opera choruses, so this concert is quite a landmark. Along with our wonderful soloists, we’ll entertain you with choruses and arias from two of Puccini’s best loved operas, Tosca and Suor Angelica.

The much-loved Tosca remains, for good reason, one of the most popular operas ever written, and from Suor Angelica we will sing the emotional climax of the piece, which in true opera style radiates an equal balance of hope and, of course, despair. Great music!

The concert starts with the Messa di Gloria and Mottetto per San Paolino which were written between 1877-79 and which showcase the young Puccini’s flair for operatic music. Composed for tenor and baritone soloists, choir, and orchestra, the Messa di Gloria is widely acknowledged as the most operatic setting of the mass ever written and a real roller coaster ride for performers and audiences alike.
