Many of our attractions in and around Bury St Edmunds are charities and depend on a volunteer army of people to operate. Some support the staff at the attractions, others are completely run by volunteers. Take a look at some of the opportunities available below and join now to make new friends, develop new skills, and make a real difference to our local tourism attractions, many of which could not operate without volunteers.
Bury St Edmunds Guildhall
Join Bury St Edmunds Guildhall's team of dedicated volunteers and help keep this beautiful grade 1 listed building going and providing the people of Bury St Edmunds (and beyond!) with a programme of exciting events! It’s an excellent opportunity to meet new people and get involved with a local charity.
Roles available: Welcome Team (Stewarding), Garden Team, Tour Guides.
St Edmundsbury Cathedral
A vital part of the welcome offered to visitors to St Edmundsbury Cathedral are the many volunteers who carry out a myriad of roles as part of our Visitor Ministry.
Roles available: Welcome Stewards, LEGO builders, Shop helpers, Tourist information Assistants and tour guides are some of the roles on offer.
All volunteers are part of the Guild of St Edmund which meets annually to celebrate the contribution of volunteers.
Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum
Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum is a small, friendly, volunteer run Museum, dedicated to keeping the memories and history alive of the American Airmen/women who served in the 94th Bomb Group of the USAAF 8th Air Force during WWII.
Roles available: maintenance, meet and greet for visitors, tour guiding.
Suffolk Regiment Museum
Suffolk Regiment Museum tells the story of the regiment from its foundation in 1685 to amalgamation with the Royal Norfolk Regiment in 1959 through medals, uniforms, photographs, weapons, equipment and personal memorabilia. They are located in the historic Keep, Gibraltar Barracks, Bury St Edmunds
You need to be able to spare one day a week and need no experience of the Museum, the collection or the military.
Roles available: meet-and-greet for our visitors and supporting our Curator.
National Trust Ickworth
At Ickworth we have volunteers every single one of our department, from House Experience to Fundraising, from Retail and Café to Maintenance, from Visitor Experience to Gardening and Parkland, if Ickworth is looking after something, Volunteers are involved.
Once part of the team we have a whole array of walks, talks and socials you can get involved in too, because we know how much a volunteering community can mean to our team members.

Abbey Gardens
The Abbey Gardens Friends are an independent group of volunteers from the local community, who themselves enjoy the Gardens and who wish to contribute to the pleasure which others derive from their visits there.
They perform the regular ongoing tasks to be found in all gardens: digging, weeding, lifting and replanting and trimming the shoots from the boles of trees; and there are also specific projects to undertake.
Roles available: working in the Gardens or serving on the committee
Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds
Do you love theatre and want to learn more from behind the scenes? Enjoy meeting new people and have some spare time during the week?
Then Theatre Royal may have the perfect opportunity for you!
Roles available: assisting with front of house operations, working as part of the marketing team with mailings and leaflet drops, or joining the theatre gardeners.

Fullers Mill Garden
If you have a few hours to spare each week and want to join our wonderful community of volunteers, Fullers Mill Garden in West Stow would love to hear from you.
Roles available: help maintain the gardens, welcome visitors and groups and promote the work of Perennial, the charity which runs Fullers Mill.
Clare Ancient House Museum
Exhibitions at Clare Ancient House Museum tell the history of the town of Clare, of the Lords and Ladies who once lived there, and of the ordinary people who lived and worked in Clare.
Helpers of the Museum are invited to various social occasions and excursions.
Roles available: Exhibition research, stewarding and other areas of work.

Clare Castle Country Park Trust
There is something for everyone at Clare Castle Country Park. Whether you’re looking to volunteer once a week, once a month or at a one-off event, they would love to hear from you.
Nestled in the heart of the historic town of Clare, it is a chance to get close to nature and learn about the town’s fascinating history and heritage.
Roles available: working outdoors with our “greenspace” working parties, stewarding at our visitor centre, taking photos in the Park; helping to maintain our social media; and helping out at exhibitions and events.
Lavenham Guildhall
Managed by The National Trust, Lavenham Guildhall is properly known as the Guildhall of Corpus Christi and is one of the finest timber-framed buildings in England. The building dates from around 1530 built on the back of the boom of the cloth industry in the early 16th Century.
Our volunteers bring the story and history of Lavenham and the Guildhall to life for all.
Roles available: Guides that provide our visitors with a historical encyclopedia of information about the village, volunteer spinners who share their craft, welcome volunteers who greet our visitors.

The Food Museum
The Food Museum, located in Stowmarket, aims to connect people with where their food comes from.
They explore themes connected by food – social, historical, technological, industrial, environmental – and give visitors to The Food Museum hands-on experiences which bring collections alive, teach skills and create memories.
Roles available: From caring for collections and estate, to greeting and teaching visitors, and everything in-between!

Gainsborough's House
Gainsborough’s House is the national centre for Thomas Gainsborough, and the painter's childhood home, and it holds the most comprehensive collection of his work in a single setting.
A varied programme of temporary exhibitions is also on show at Gainsborough's House throughout the year. Visitor’s gift shop, café and garden are also available as part of the museum experience.
Roles available: gallery stewarding, guided tours, learning workshops, administration, retail and events.
Little Hall Lavenham
One of the oldest buildings in the best preserved of the Suffolk wool towns, Little Hall is a 14th Century house believed to be built for a family of clothiers and its subsequent development has mirrored the changing fortunes of Lavenham.
Little Hall was restored by the Gayer-Anderson brothers in the 1920s and 30s and they filled the house with art and artefacts collected during their extensive global travels. For more information regarding Little Hall please go to www.littlehall.org.uk
