About this event
In anticipation of the upcoming release of Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day (Wednesday, June 10) Abbeygate Cinema is showing some of his greatest science fiction films throughout the years.
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (1977) - Friday 15 May at 8pm
In the midst of a series of unexplained events, electrical lineman Roy Neary encounters a UFO on a deserted road whilst investigating a large-scale power outage. Roy becomes increasingly obsessed with UFOs and subliminal messaging following his experience, distancing himself from his wife and children but drawing him closer towards parallel investigations being conducted by scientists, the military and other survivors of encounters who are attempting to communicate with the mysterious otherworldly presence.
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) - Friday 22 May at 8pm
When an alien is inadvertently left behind on earth, he finds refuge with a lonely youngster named Elliot. As Elliot and E.T. bond, it soon becomes clear that E.T. must find his way home before government officials capture him and experiment upon him. Together, E.T., Elliot and Elliot’s family and friends help reunite E.T. with his spaceship.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) - Friday 29 May at 8pm
In the not-so-distant future, David, a robot with actual human feelings, especially a never-ending love for his “mother,” Monica, is adopted as a substitute for her real son, who, afflicted with an incurable disease, remains in “cryo-stasis.” David lives happily with Monica and her husband, but when the couple’s real son returns home after being cured, David’s life changes dramatically.
War Of The Worlds (2005) - Friday 5 June at 8pm
As Earth is invaded by alien tripod fighting machines, one family fights for survival.
Steven Spielberg’s reimagining of War of the Worlds is a dramatic science fiction thriller that reveals the extraordinary battle for the future of humankind through the eyes of one American family fighting to survive it. As with Spielberg’s other post-millennium science fiction thriller Minority Report, War of the Worlds sees the filmmaker reflecting on a post-9/11 world through the lens of genre to tell a story for its time.
