United Reformed Church

As one of the early Separatist churches in England, the church was officially constituted as a Church of Religious Dissentersin 1646. Its history pre-dates this, however, with its association with early martyrs of Congregationalism, Elias Thacker and John Copping, who were hung in 1584 for rejecting Elizabeth I as head of the Church and for disobedience to ecclesiastic law. A memorial to this martyrdom stands in the forecourt of the church. The church has been located in Whiting Street since 1697, the building completed in 1708. Formally part of the Congregational Union of England and Wales, the church has, since 1972, been a part of the United Reformed Church. As a church, it continued to witness to its founding principles, but is also a place of welcome for all. Weekly we meet to worship at 10.45am on a Sunday. On a Wednesday we hold a brief service at 9.45am, ideal if you can't make it to church on a Sunday.Areas of our premises are available for hire. Our halls are available to be let for one-off events or regular meetings; details available on our website. We also have seven offices on site which are available to rent.
