About this event
A new mini-exhibition featuring objects from Snape Anglo-Saxon cemetery has recently opened at West Stow Anglo-Saxon Museum.
Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service have kindly loaned grave goods from excavations that took place towards the end of the 20th century. Archaeologists discovered log boat burials, eight ring ditches, a coffin, cremations in both urns and copper vessels, and evidence of a possible funerary pyre. Unusual grave goods included a lyre and a horse’s head with tack.
The burials at Snape indicated varying beliefs, cultural affinities and, in some cases, hints of status. Remarkable survivals of organic materials such as textile, leather and horn gave valuable evidence for interpreting these objects and the people who were interred with them.
These amazing artefacts will be on display at West Stow until December and are included as part of the standard admission ticket.
