About Bardwell Church

The medieval stained glass windows, which include an image of Sir William de Berdewell were removed, restored and cleaned as part of a repair and reordering project in 2019 with thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund. An outcome of this grant enabled us to produce guide materials both of the church and of the life of Sir William de Berdewell.

One of the four remaining 'angel' bosses in the nave is dated 1421, MCDXX1, indicating that this part of the church is early 15th Century.

Restoration work has just been completed on the 11 chancel memorials.

The 87' high tower contains the old belfry with its medieval oak bell frame which originally housed 4 bells. The new, lower, stainless steel frame now houses 8 bells.

We have the grave in our churchyard of Henry Addison who was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1859 for his actions in the Indian Mutiny.
