About this event
Twenty-year-old pianist and composer from Bury St Edmunds, Oscar Lyons, makes his debut on the Apex stage on 16th January.
Oscar began playing the piano at the age of 5 and was a member of the Aldeburgh Young Musicians programme, based at Snape Maltings. He is a two-time National Youth Jazz Collective alumnus and is currently studying jazz at the Royal Academy of Music, working with some of the most innovative musicians on the scene.
Oscar has been described by UK Jazz News as “hugely talented”, by jazz pianist Chris Ingham as “a once-in-a-generation talent”, and by Director of the Watford Jazz Junction, Chris Newstead, as “extraordinary… a future star of European jazz”.
He has already established himself as a composer and improviser and has developed a distinctive voice; in addition to the jazz tradition, he draws from Latin American styles, English folk music and hymnal music.
Lyons has played as part of the London-based concert series Jazz in the Round. He has been featured at Ronnie Scott’s in the show ‘Future Movers’, which showcases some of the UK’s finest young jazz musicians, and he has played twice at the Watford Jazz Junction, supporting Emma Rawicz and Mark Kavuma.
Following a sell-out performance at Bury’s Hunter Club in 2024, he returns to Bury St Edmunds with a group of contemporaries from the London jazz scene to perform his original and vibrant music.
Oscar Lyons is at The Apex on Friday 16th January at 7.30pm.
About the Venue
The Apex is an award-winning venue, known for its acoustic excellence and home to a diverse programme of live music and events; from classical concerts to pop, rock, jazz, blues, world, country and folk, plus comedy and dance performances.
It also hosts a number of community and corporate events, offering the local community and wider environs a unique and exciting space from which visitors can see a great selection of artists, bands and events.
It has been very well publicised (and we never tire of hearing it!) that, as well as its architectural beauty, The Apex also has the very best acoustics, with many musicians who've played here describing it as the best acoustic in the UK, if not Europe:
"Best new venue in the UK. Absolutely superb" - Funeral For A Friend
"Best acoustic wee had in 40 years of touring" - Fairport Convention
"The best hall we have ever played in" - The Escher String Quartet
