Reconstructing the Abbey of St Edmund - Dr Richard Hoggett

About this event

The Abbey of St Edmund was one of the largest and most important monastic houses in western Christendom and home of the Shrine of Edmund.
Following its dissolution in 1539, the site became increasingly ruinous as the buildings were quarried for materials and the former precinct was redeveloped.

This lecture illustrates various attempts made since the 18th century to reconstruct what the abbey looked like in its heyday and fully appreciate what has been lost.

Dr Richard Hogget is an Archaeologist, heritage consultant, lecturer and writer, with over 25 years’ experience in the academic, commercial and local authority heritage sectors.
