The Mildenhall Treasure Mixed Reality Exhibition with FREE Entry offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the excitement of uncovering one of the most important Roman discoveries ever made in Britain.
The Mildenhall Treasure was discovered in a Suffolk field in 1942 and consists of 34 magnificent pieces of late Roman silver tableware dating from the 4th century AD. Renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and historical significance, the treasure has become one of Britain's most celebrated archaeological finds. While the original collection is permanently displayed at the British Museum, with a replica set housed within Mildenhall Museum, this immersive exhibition allows visitors to connect with the treasure in an entirely new and interactive way.
Using mixed reality headsets, visitors step into a digitally recreated version of the original discovery site. Rather than viewing artefacts behind glass, you are invited to view the landscape, uncover exquisitely detailed 3D model replicas of the Roman silver from the ground, and examine each object as if you were the person who first discovered the hoard. Rich interpretation, engaging storytelling and immersive visuals reveal the history of the treasure and its enduring importance to Suffolk's heritage.
Developed by Xibitr, digital heritage Mixed Reality specialists in partnership with Mildenhall Museum, the exhibition combines archaeology, innovation and storytelling to create an accessible experience for visitors of all ages. By taking the exhibition on tour across West Suffolk, the project enables new audiences to engage with an internationally significant collection while celebrating the remarkable local history on their doorstep.
The Mildenhall Treasure Mixed Reality Exhibition demonstrates how digital technology can transform the way we experience museum collections, making heritage more interactive, engaging and accessible for future generations.
This project has been made possible through funding from the Suffolk County Council Culture Project Fund, with generous support from The Mildenhall Museum Society.
