Led by our enthusiastic team of Tour Guides, you’ll travel around the theatre, taking in the building and all of its history, from front of house to behind the scenes. Step on up and into the spotlight where the likes of Ian McKellan CBE, Dame Judi Dench DBE, Sir Peter Hall CBE and many more have gone before you. You’ll even get to tread the boards yourself!
To attend a tour, you must book in advance.
Tours are approx. 1 hour 30 minutes.
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide accessible friendly tours due to the design of the theatre. Along with navigating around the building on foot, there are 83 steps included in the tour that cannot be avoided.

About the Venue
Built in 1819 the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is the last surviving example of a working Regency playhouse in the country. As a National Trust property there are a variety of ways to explore behind-the-scenes and find out more about its rich and vibrant history.
Theatre Royal was designed by renowned architect William Wilkins – also famous for designing the National Gallery and University College London. With many of its original features still intact it is the last remaining Regency playhouse in the country, and one of the most beautiful, intimate and historic theatres in the world.
Join one of our Guided Tours and discover why Theatre Royal is one of the most significant theatre buildings in the country. Our tours provide a fascinating and lively insight to the theatre’s history and its uses over the centuries. Our Guided Tours last approximately 90 minutes and include stairs.
