About this event
The stereotype of witches and the European witch-craze, where many women were persecuted for alleged devil worship and harmful magic, is well-known. However, much of what we believe is shaped by myths and legends. Witchcraft is a highly emotive and easily distorted topic. By examining historical archives, we can uncover the true nature of witch-hunting.
Malcolm Gaskill is Emeritus Professor of Early Modern History at the University of East Anglia.
He has written many articles about the history of witchcraft and several books, including Witchfinders: Witchcraft: A Very Short Introduction (2011) and most recently The Ruin of All Witches: Life and Death in the New World (2021), shortlisted for the Wolfson Prize for History.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and lives in Cambridge.
