Jubilee Celebrations Begin for the Roman Catholic Diocese of East Anglia
A year-long Jubilee programme of events
The Roman Catholic Diocese of East Anglia, established in 1976, is marking its 50th anniversary with a year-long Jubilee programme of events across the region. Local celebrations in Bury St Edmunds are set to highlight both the rich history and the growing diversity of the Catholic community.
A wide-ranging programme of events is planned, involving parishioners from across the Church community. Activities will include an International Evening, a flower festival, historical and photographic exhibitions, musical performances, pilgrimages, and special services marking Pentecost and the Feast of St Edmund.
Fr Sean Connolly, Parish Priest serving Bury St Edmunds since 2023, reflected on the significance of the milestone year: “Since coming here I have been struck by the strong sense of friendship, not only among fellow Catholics but across the wider community. There is a genuine desire to share the values of faith and love. This Jubilee gives us an opportunity to reflect on the past 50 years, recognise the changes we have experienced, and consider how we build for the future. Our congregation has grown significantly in both size and diversity, with an increasing number of young people. At a time when social cohesion is more important than ever, we hope this year’s services and events will help strengthen community bonds and contribute to a positive future.”
Event coordinator John Saunders said: “It is incredibly encouraging to see so many people keen to get involved and to learn more about each other. Our first event on 12 May, held in the Church crypt, will set the tone for the year. It will feature short talks about people’s heritage, opportunities to sample cultural foods, and a chance to enjoy a relaxed and welcoming social evening.”

St Edmund’s Catholic Community on Westgate Street dates back to 1762, when a chapel was first established. The current church building was constructed in 1837 and remains a significant historic and spiritual centre in the town. Formerly part of the Northampton Diocese, the parish became part of the Diocese of East Anglia upon its creation in 1976.
Today, St Edmund’s is home to a vibrant and diverse congregation and will play a central role in Jubilee celebrations, reflecting the Diocese’s commitment to unity and community engagement.
