Family-run Suffolk glamping retreat wins Best New Tourism Business award
The Four Bells Glamping, a family-run retreat in the Suffolk countryside just south of Bury St Edmunds, is celebrating after being named Best New Tourism Business at the Suffolk and Norfolk Tourism Awards.
In just three years since opening, the glamping site has built a reputation as a luxury slow-travel escape where guests can step away from the demands of busy modern life and reconnect with nature in comfort.
Surrounded by farmland, the site combines the simplicity of outdoor living with thoughtful touches of luxury, including fire pits for toasting marshmallows and wood-burning stoves for cosy evenings inside. Guests stay in well-equipped bell tents featuring king-size beds, with futon armchairs that convert into additional beds for families and hot tubs – just perfect for stargazing. Each unit also has its own private bathroom with rainfall power showers and show-stopping outdoor baths.
Run by Alex Brewis and his wife Lucy, the business is a true labour of love, shaped by their passion for the area – with Lucy having lived in the village all her life. Speaking about the win, Alex said:
“We work incredibly hard, living and breathing The Four Bells to make sure every guest has an extra-special experience here,” he said. “We love our corner of the countryside and have always been passionate about living in nature. We want to share that with our guests, giving them the chance to slow down and take a break from everyday life. It’s in these moments that precious memories can be made that last a lifetime.”
The site has been carefully designed to balance privacy with community, with accommodation – including a dog-friendly unit - spaced out across the three acre site, while shared areas allow guests to barbecue, enjoy sunset drinks and mingle with like-minded visitors.
The family are keen to focus on low-impact tourism, taking sustainable steps with the business with the electricity being supplied by an off-grid solar system. The wood used on site is sourced from locally managed woodland with replanting built into the process. Half of the land has been left as wild meadow to encourage wildlife, from rabbits to red kites, to thrive. Guests looking for a digital detox can switch off the Wi-Fi and lock phones and devices away in secure safes in their bathrooms to fully embrace the slower pace of rural life.
Winning Best New Tourism Business is a significant milestone for The Four Bells Glamping and reflects the growing demand for meaningful, nature-led travel experiences.
