A collaboration with Bury St Edmunds Guildhall and Bury St Edmunds Tour Guides
Bury St Edmunds Tour Guides
To coincide with the release of the Apple TV+ World War II drama 'Masters of the Air', in collaboration with Bury St Edmunds Guildhall, Bury St Edmunds Tour Guides have created a new guided walk on Bury St Edmunds in WWII.
To quote Winston Churchill, “For our air superiority, which by the end of 1944 was to become air supremacy, full tribute must be paid to the United States Eighth Air Force. Now we were masters of the air.”
The long-awaited release of the Apple TV+ World War II drama Masters of the Air is based on Donald L. Miller's 'Masters of The Air' book. Made by Band of Brothers and The Pacific producers Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, the nine-episode mini-series will focus on the courage and sacrifice of the US Eighth Air Force in the East of England during WWII will be screened starting 26 January 2024.
RAF Bury St Edmunds became home to the 94th Bomb Group from 15 June 1943 to 12 December 1945 flying the B-17 Flying Fortress and they are mentioned in Miller's book.
The 60-minute 'Masters of The Air' Tour will bring to life those Bury St Edmunds buildings and places which contributed to the war effort or helped raise the morale of allied servicemen and women during those dark days.
It will end with a 30-minute visit to Bury St Edmunds Guildhall, to see the only surviving Royal Observer Corps Operations Room in the country, where specialist guides will describe its vital role in Britain’s air defence and the many lives it saved.
The tours are expected to prove popular with residents of the town, visitors including those from the USA who wish to re-trace the paths of their forefathers.
All information about this and other tours can be viewed at Bury St Edmunds Tour Guides website.
Adults £12, U-18s £6, U-5s free. Advance booking essential.
