Where to Get a Great Sunday Roast
Whether you’re looking for hearty and heart-warming or classy and refined, here’s our guide to top Sunday roasts in Bury St Edmunds.
The good news for visitors to Bury St Edmunds is the town is blessed with more than its fair share of outstanding eateries serving superb Sunday roasts. But be warned book if you can to avoid disappointment!
The One Bull

The One Bull is a relaxed yet stylish gastropub praised for its Sunday roasts. Suffolk beef sirloin (served pink) and Blythburgh free range slow-reared pork loin and belly are regularly on the menu with seasonal vegetables. Pescatarians and vegetarians can enjoy fish battered with in-house Brewshed beer batter or dishes such as brie and red onion tart (with crisp pastry and ripe creamy Brie).
Their Brewshed beer is brewed locally: choose from Pale Ale, Best Bitter, American Blonde or changing seasonal brews. If wine is your preferred lunch tipple, ask for the award-winning wine list, which includes familiar names as well as some more unusual choices. Cap off your meal with homemade ice cream and a handpicked pudding wine or a selection of British cheeses and a glass of vintage port.
Queens Bar & Grill

You can find a traditional Sunday roast at Queens Bar & Grill every Sunday.
Their sample menu features classics including Smoked Topside of Suffolk Beef and Roast Loin of Pork. Having their own farm means Queens Bar & Grill have the flexibility to use different cuts of pork & lamb, so they usually have something on their special board and you’ll find a few home-reared meat dishes on the menu.
They also do yummy cauliflower cheese as a side! Why not wash it down with some quirky cocktails?

The Masons Arms

It’s not just microbreweries and freehouses brewing and serving high-calibre beers and food in Bury St Edmunds.
The historic The Masons Arms on Whiting Street is Greene King’s official flagship pub, and visitors here can be among the first to try exclusive new beers from the brewer which has been brewing in Bury St Edmunds for over 200 years.
The menu includes locally-sourced roast topside of beef or leg of lamb with red wine gravy, Norfolk turkey with white wine gravy, or Suffolk pork hock with crackling and cider gravy. Crispy roast potatoes, homemade Yorkshire pudding and seasonal vegetables accompany all roasts.
The Bushel

Greene King also owns The Bushel on St John’s Street, a 15th Century coaching inn serving a choice of Sunday roasts with seasonal fresh vegetables, as well as hearty portions of other traditional pub grub.
The Fox Inn

The Dog and Partridge on Crown Street, which has been a pub for over 200 years, and The Fox Inn on Eastgate Street, another 15th century inn, are two more good value Sunday roast options owned by Greene King.
Damson & Wilde

Part of the Gusto Pronto family, based in and around Bury St Edmunds, Damson & Wilde has a beautiful modern interior, a stunning walled garden and is a perfect place to relax and unwind for Sunday lunch or dinner which is served from 12pm to 8pm.
Choose from roast beef of sirloin, slow roasted pork belly, half a roast chicken or celeriac wellington. All served with roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. If you have room, there is a delicious range of desserts including dark chocolate mousse, sticky toffee pudding and ginger posset, poached rhubarb and lemon.
Oakes Barn

A community spirited free house, Oakes Barn is packed with character and plenty of places to get comfy and enjoy a hearty Sunday lunch.
Start your meal with a starter of locally made Scotch egg, soup of the day, battered mushrooms with garlic mayonnaise, Halloumi fries or prawn, feta and melon salad.
For your roast, choose from topside of beef, roast loin of pork, roast quarter or half a chicken or vegetable and bean cottage pie; all served with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and gravy.
Old Cannon Brewery

Treat yourself to a roast sirloin of beef, roast pork loin or a roast leg of lamb at The Old Cannon Brewery with a pint of real ale brewed downstairs!
Beer-lovers will love The Old Cannon Brewery on Cannon Street, where huge stainless-steel brewing vessels create a striking feature in this Victorian brewpub and restaurant. As well as Old Cannon Best Bitter and Gunner’s Daughter, visitors can try changing seasonal brews alongside a range of guest ales.
Beer even makes its way onto the plates here on Sundays in the Yorkshire pudding batter, alongside locally sourced vegetables and a choice of two meats. In autumn and winter, you’ll also find dishes such as venison, redcurrant and ale casserole, while their perennially popular Gunner’s Daughter sausage and colcannon mash is available all year round. Save room for the homemade puddings, which include a gluten-free sticky toffee pudding, or a cheeseboard with three seasonal cheeses and Suffolk sticky pickle.
Alternatively, their full Cannon Fodder menu is also available on Sundays. You can also order your Sunday Roast to go in advance!
Eaterie at The Angel Hotel

At the Eaterie at the Angel Hotel, the kitchen is headed up by the 2016 Suffolk Chef of the Year, ably assisted by the 2017 winner. Take a seat in the AA 2-rosette restaurant within this ivy-wrapped Georgian hotel, and enjoy three courses of delectable seasonal delights.
Locally sourced beef with a proudly crisp Yorkshire pudding or Dingley Dell pork loin with apple sauce are accompanied by seasonal vegetables from local market gardeners, while vegetarians and non-red meat eaters will appreciate dishes such as butternut squash with pearl barley, pumpkin seed and goat curd, or fillet of hake with sea herbs.
Desserts are exquisite at the Eaterie and not to be missed: examples include raw pannacotta coffee granite with coffee syrup, or poached figs with chocolate & Frangelico sorbet, crème fraiche and meadowsweet meringue.
The Priory Hotel

You can also enjoy a very fine Sunday lunch in the Garden Restaurant at the Priory Hotel. The peaceful restaurant in this listed Georgian hotel overlooks the hotel’s landscaped gardens where a priory stood in the 13th century.
Locally sourced meat – including lamb from the nearby Denham Estate – is the star of the show at this AA rosette restaurant, alongside carefully prepared seasonal vegetables.
You won’t want to pass on dessert either: choose from tempting treats such as the Priory ‘St Edmunds’ pudding with crème Anglaise or poached pear in red wine with crumbled Binham Blue and walnuts.
Beyond Bury St Edmunds
All Saints Hotel

Whether you wish to dine al fresco or inside the 2 AA rosette restaurant with panoramic views of The Suffolk Golf Course, The View Restaurant at All Saints Hotel in Fornham St. Genevieve, just 8 minutes by car from Bury St Edmunds town centre, has a table waiting for you.
Using locally sourced, seasonal produce with the most incredible flavours from local suppliers across East Anglia. You need look no further for a location close to Bury St Edmunds for a relaxed evening sipping cocktails on the terrace, a special anniversary or a birthday lunch.
The View's Sunday menu changes regularly but always feature Sunday roasts, currently Sirloin of Beef with Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes and gravy plus Loin of Pork also served with Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes and gravy, along with a wonderful starters menu featuring baked camembert to share, salt and pepper crispy squid and crab cake katsu to name a few. For dessert choose from treacle tart, rum poached pineapple, vanilla pannacotta, triple chocolate brownie or their wonderful cheeseboard.
Ravenwood Hall

Ravenwood Hall Hotel's Sunday menu is a gastronomic delight. Choose from English Pea & Garden Mint Soup, Suffolk Ham Hock & Parsley Terrine, Hot Smoked Salmon & Dill Fishcake and The Ravenwood Ultimate Prawn Cocktail to start.
Then delicious roasts including Roast Leg of English Lamb, Roast Sirloin of 28 Day Matured British Beef and Roasted Whole Chicken to Share (for two). Finish with Suffolk Strawberry Eton Mess or Marmalade Steamed Sponge Pudding.
The Black Lion, Long Melford

A great way to combine good with with good company, gather friends and family around one table and feast on a delicious sharing roast at The Black Lion in Long Melford.
The family sharing roast includes a board of meats (with vegan alternatives on request), lots of seasonal vegetables and a few extras that do not accompany our individual Sunday lunches, like pigs in blankets and stuffing.
